The territory of the protected landscape area “Veclaicene” is crossed by the river Vaidava that is a tributary of the left bank of the river Mustjegi. The Vaidava runs out of Lake Murats that is located on the Latvian-Estonian border and for the further 3.4 km the Vaidava is the border river of both the countries. The total area of Lake Murats is 66 ha, and 11.2 ha of them are in the territory of Latvia. The lake is shallow, its average depth is 2.2 m. The lake corresponds to the European Union protected habitats – 3150 the ES significance priority biotope code natural eutrophic lakes with submerged and floating aquatic plant vegetation.
The part of Lake Murats in the territory of Latvia is open for public therefore anybody can go fishing there.
Starting from its source from Lake Murats in the length of 5 km, the banks of the Vaidava are boggy forming pond like widenings with a lot of reeds, and the flow of the river is less than 0.2 m/s there. Further the flow gets faster but the bottom of the river – sandier. Down from Ziemeri the flow of the river has been changed in the length of about 2 km. Downwards from the Grūbe Mill, the width of the river is 15-20 m but its bottom is variated – dolomite, sand, pebbles and stones in some parts.
The Vaidava is a popular fishing river due to the grayling and brook trout.
